ABOUT BETWEEN A WOK AND A HOT POT
Between a Wok and a Hot Pot (Asian-Canadian Dinner Theatre) is a new play by Amanda Lin, currently being developed thanks to support from the Ontario Arts Council, Cahoots Theatre, and Soulpepper Theatre. It was workshopped and developed by Ergo Arts Theatre in Toronto as part of Ergo Pink Fest in March 2019.
Synopsis: Bubble tea. Kimchi. Hot pot. It’s cool to be Asian right now. While serving a hot pot dinner to her audience, Amanda reminisces on when it wasn’t so cool to be Asian, and delves into the complicated topic of identity and cultural appropriation in food and art.
Development History:
- December 2017 – First draft
- August 2018 – Presented by Theatre Count and GLO Collective as a pilot production in Kingston, Ontario, supported by Fred Euringer and The Dan School of Drama and Music at Queen’s University. The main goal of this production was to test drive the food elements and collect audience feedback. (Director: Stephanie Fung, Dramaturg: Blair MacMillan)
- March 2019 – Presented as a staged reading by Ergo Arts Theatre as part of Ergo Pink Fest. (Director: Marjorie Chan, Dramaturg: Elyne Quan)
- September 2019 – Development period with support from the Ontario Arts Council and Cahoots Theatre (Dramaturg: Jasmine Chen)
Currently, we are planning to hold another workshop and staged reading in April 2020 at the Tarragon Work Space with support from Tarragon Theatre’s Workspace Program, under the guidance of Artistic Director, Richard Rose.
By purchasing a cat calendar, your donation will go towards the continued development of Between a Wok and a Hot Pot by helping us pay the artists involved, purchase props and supplies, cover administrative expenses, and more.
ABOUT JIM
Asian ‘Jim’ Buttermilk Carrey was born in July 2019 in Cabbagetown, Toronto. He received his PhD in Agricultural Studies from Guelph University, and his research is focused around sustainable farming in Ontario. He is currently based in Koreatown, Toronto. Jim spends his free time licking his own butt and generally just causing mayhem.
ABOUT THE FUNDRAISER
In September 2019, Blair MacMillan adopted Jim, and it quickly dawned on us how adorable this cat is–although we are certainly biased, he is easily within the 90th percentile of cat cuteness. We realized within weeks that we should be capitalizing on Jim’s looks, as he, a cat, is unable to do so himself due to a lack of thumbs. So, the idea of a 2020 Cat Calendar was born. The idea was simple: spread the good news of Jim to as many people as possible.
